“There are not many places you can gaze out from 3,400 feet in elevation on the mountains of Southwest Virginia while listening to great mountain music, but Big Walker Lookout is one of them. And it’s not just the music that is authentic, but the store features a lot of Southwest Virginia craft as well” says Jack Hinshelwood, The Crooked Road’s Executive Director.
The Big Walker Lookout & Country Store has been in business for 65 years and features the art work & handmade crafts of over 25 Appalachian artisans from Wythe & Bland Counties, and surrounding areas. For those with plenty of energy, the site features a 100 foot observation tower to climb for an even higher view. In addition to the extensive variety of handcrafted goods that are available at the County Store, artisans demonstrate their skills on the front porch Saturdays from May through October. On Sunday afternoons from May to October, visitors can enjoy traditional music presented outside the store. In the tradition of many early country music performances, the store has plans to create a stage on the bed of a 1953 Chevy ton and a half truck. The artisan demonstrations and music performances are free of charge.
The Crooked Road recently announced the naming of 12 new Affiliated Venues and Festivals. The Affiliates are all traditional music presenters and include annual festivals and weekly or monthly jams and concerts. A complete listing of the Affiliated Venues and Festivals and the nine Major Venues of The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail can be found at www.thecrookedroad.org.
The Crooked Road’s mission is to support tourism and economic development in Southwest Virginia by celebrating and preserving this Appalachian region's unique musical and cultural heritage. The Trail itself covers 330 miles and connects Rocky Mount in Franklin County to Breaks Interstate Park in Dickenson County.
