Pike City is Featured on Mountaintop Stage
Showcasing talented musicians is the foundation of the Mountain Top Music series at Big Walker Lookout. This fall, several musical groups will grace the porch stage for the first time, including one group who proves you are never too young to have talent.
Pike City, of Hillsville Virginia will make their debut at Big Walker Lookout & BW Country Store on Saturday, September 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Comprised of four teenage musicians, Pike City has individually and collectively won several music awards and are currently anticipating the release of their first CD, featuring gospel songs. The group plays a variety of music from bluegrass to new grass.
The four-member group includes Zeb Hicks, Karissa Hayden, Becca Miller and Tony Hicks. Zeb is a high school senior who sings and plays the banjo. As the spokesperson of the group, he is at home on the stage entertaining the audience with jokes. In May 2013, he was awarded a scholarship from the Houstonfest Committee. Besides music, he enjoys playing basketball and working with children. He hopes to go into the missionary work.
Karissa is the lead singer and bass player of the group. A Carroll County High school junior, Karissa has won first place two years in a row at the Allegheny Fiddlers Convention. She was also asked to perform at the “Fiddle and the Plow” as that Willard Gayheart and Scott Freeman venue became an affiliated location of the Crooked Road. She enjoys working with children, especially those with special needs, and would like to become a teacher.
Tony is the youngest of the group. A sophomore, he sings and plays rhythm and lead guitar. A champion guitarist, he has won first place at the Galax Fiddlers and Fries Fiddlers 2012. He was awarded the Jesse Level Trophy for outstanding guitarist. Earlier this year, Tony was awarded scholarships from the Houstonfest Committee and the Wayne C. Henderson Foundation. He enjoys working with children and adults with disabilities. He plans to pursue a career as a professional guitarist and teacher.
Becca Miller, the newest member of the group, is a 16 year old fiddle player and is excited to be joining this up and coming band!
